DO YOU HAVE TO READ MUSIC TO MAKE MUSIC?
by WILL REYNOLDS
I wish I hadn't learned to read music.
(?!)
Let me explain.
When we make music by reading printed score, 80% of all the processing is being done by our visual centers. Of course it is. We're reading.
Our brains are always trying to find the fastest way to a solution.
As soon as I could read music, whenever I wanted to learn a song, I didn't learn it by ear. I learned it by SIGHT.
That work of deep listening went away and it was all about execution and comprehending something on a page, rather than connecting deeply with sounds that mean so much more than just some dots on staff paper.
Now…am I saying that you should NEVER learn to read music? No! The more ways you can communicate your work to others and also comprehend the work of your heroes, the further you will go.
But don’t think that you have to learn how to read music before you can make music.
You can make it right now. Do you want to find out how? Set up a FREE Strategy Session today.
